Building students’ self-esteem can go a long way to helping them remain calm and stay safe while learning to command a big rig in the real-world. Driving Instructor Mike Olsen identifies positive aspects of each student’s learning style to help boost their confidence. Olsen joined Durham Colleges’ Driver Training program in 2009. He obtained his A licence in 1992 from Markel Truck Driver Training, and began his career as a long-haul and regional driver for several trucking companies. He later chose an entrepreneurial path as an owner/operator of his own tractor trailer; then worked as a fleet maintenance co-ordinator for a local trucking company. With his Fleet Driver Trainer certificate, AC licence, and Air Brake Z Endorsement with signing authority, Olsen’s diverse background gives students a wealth of experience to learn from.
